A striking and highly desirable early medieval manuscript fragment from St Augustine’s City of God, one of the foundational texts of Western Christian thought and a work that shaped intellectual life throughout the Middle Ages. Augustine’s masterpiece, written in the early 5th century in response to the fall of Rome, presents a sweeping vision of history contrasting the earthly and heavenly cities, and remained the most influential of all patristic writings for over a millennium.

This leaf preserves passages from Book VIII, including Augustine’s vivid discussion of demons and his engagement with Platonic philosophy through the writings of Apuleius — among the most intellectually intriguing sections of the work. Manuscript witnesses to Augustine dating from before the year 1000 are rare on the market; fragments of this quality offer collectors a tangible connection to the Carolingian renaissance and the transmission of classical and Christian learning.

The text is executed in an elegant and confident Caroline minuscule, notable for its clarity, balance, and aesthetic refinement. The rounded, disciplined script exemplifies the mature bookhand developed in the great scriptoria of 9th-century France and remains remarkably legible more than eleven centuries later. Faint dry-point ruling is still visible.

Recovered from later use in a binding, the fragment shows expected signs of age and reuse, including moderate wear and soiling, yet the recto remains clean and visually impressive. Preserving 21 lines of text on each side, it stands as a rare and evocative survival from the golden age of Carolingian manuscript production — an important and displayable relic of early medieval scholarship.
